road trips are fun

19 May 2007 · Leave a Comment

i would like to begin this post by commenting on the glory that is burger house. adam and i ate there four times in two days, and it was amazing. if you live in dallas, call me and we can go together and revel in the beauty of their bacon cheese burger.

isn’t this a great picture? adam and i decided to go camping on monday. he and i had been talking about taking a road trip for a while, and so after much deliberation we decided to go to arkansas.

i love road trips. there is something comforting about the open road and a big map and plenty of music for the stereo. the best part is when you get off the interstate and drive through all the little towns with names like murfeesboro and populations under 100.

we worked our way through most of rural easter arkansas and practically all of my music collection in about nine hours, pulling into our campsite at mount magazine state park around 11 pm. it was really foggy and rainy, making it deceptively similar to autumn, which was fine by me. and then amazingly the next day was totally clear, as if it had never rained.

so we spent most of the day cooking, walking, making fire, taking pictures of said fire, smoking cigars, eating smores, talking, making friends with bearded strangers, reading, driving, exploring, and general adventuring. it was great.

and now i am home again, which is also nice. if you are still reading, please go and buy any album by regina spektor. she is great.

school’s out forever…or just for the next few months

7 May 2007 · Leave a Comment

well, i just got back from my last final, meaning that another year at baylor has ended, and more importantly, summer is here. summer is a great time of year for students, because you get to stay out late, sleep in, swim, go on trips, and eat watermelon every day if you want to! usually at the end of the year i think that it has gone by faster than the last, but this time around it doesn’t feel that way. it feels like forever ago when i was moving into my apartment, even though it was just last august.

summer for me is typically a really eventful time of the year. when i was growing up i spent most of the time outdoors at camps or hiking trips. i went to costa rica for a few months last summer, which was amazing. this summer if going to be just as busy it looks like. i managed to get a research assistant position with the environmental studies department, so i will be in upstate new york during june, working on the appalachian trail. after that is finished, i’ll be heading to oxford with the great text department for all of july. and then i’ll be back home for a few weeks before school starts. it’s going to be nuts (or bananas, if you are so inclined).

and so i find the end of the year very bittersweet, because even though summer and all its adventures are about to start, everyone is going to be apart for so long. but you can’t let that get you down, or else you won’t ever enjoy the great things that happen, whether it’s going to a foreign country or just relaxing at home with friends and family. and of course, you can’t forget that it all starts over again in august, picking up wherever you left off!

so i’m going to be writing alot more in here keeping you all up-to-date with whatever craziness i’m partaking in at the time. i’m thinking i’m going to be on a once a week schedule, but we will see how well that works out once i start getting busy. and with that, i hope everyone has a great few months!
